Particle and Astrophysics Aspects of Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays
نویسنده
چکیده
The origin of cosmic rays is one of the major unresolved astrophysical questions. In particular, the highest energy cosmic rays observed possess macroscopic energies and their origin is likely to be associated with the most energetic processes in the Universe. Their existence triggered a flurry of theoretical explanations ranging from conventional shock acceleration to particle physics beyond the Standard Model and processes taking place at the earliest moments of our Universe. Furthermore, many new experimental activities promise a strong increase of statistics at the highest energies and a combination with γ−ray and neutrino astrophysics will put strong constraints on these theoretical models. Detailed Monte Carlo simulations indicate that charged ultra-high energy cosmic rays can also be used as probes of large scale magnetic fields whose origin may open another window into the very early Universe. We give an overview over this quickly evolving reasearch field.

متن کاملCosmic Physics: the High Energy Frontier
Cosmic rays have been observed up to energies 10 times larger than those of the best particle accelerators. Studies of astrophysical particles (hadrons, neutrinos and photons) at their highest observed energies have implications for fundamental physics as well as astrophysics. Thus, the cosmic high energy frontier is the nexus to new particle physics. This overview discusses recent advances bei...
متن کاملImplications of Ultrahigh Energy Air Showers for Physics and Astrophysics
The primary ultrahigh energy particles which produce giant extensive air showers in the Earth’s atmosphere present an intriguing mystery from two points of view: (1) How are these particles produced with such astounding energies, eight orders of magnitude higher than those produced by the best man-made terrestrial accelerators? (2) Since they are most likely extragalactic in origin, how do they...
متن کاملTesting Lorentz Symmetry Using High Energy Astrophysics Observations
We discuss some of the tests of Lorentz symmetry made possible by astrophysical observations of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays, γ-rays and neutrinos. These are among the most sensitive tests of Lorentz invariance violation because they are the highest energy phenomena known to man.
متن کاملAngular Correlation Estimates for Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays
Identifying the sources of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays remains one of the major challenges in astrophysics. If these cosmic rays are not too severely deflected by magnetic fields while in transit, then their arrival directions will provide crucial information about their origins. The High Resolution Fly’s Eye (HiRes) experiment, consisting of two air fluorescence detector sites, has been makin...
